Why Canadian AI teams need Forward Deployed Engineers

By StarApple AI Editorial Desk

FDEs connect technical capability to a real workflow, with evaluation, privacy and user ownership built in.

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) works with the people who own a workflow and builds software around a specific, observed need. For AI, that connects user discovery with engineering, data access, evaluation, deployment and handover.

FDE, explained

An FDE, or Forward Deployed Engineer, is an applied engineer who works close to the people facing a real operational problem. The role combines software and AI engineering with discovery, workflow design, evaluation, deployment, user support and handover. The goal is a system that fits the work and can be assessed in its real context.

Canadian teams adopting AI: where to begin

A Canadian deployment must be assessed in its own legal, contractual and sector context. The FDE should work with privacy, security and domain experts to establish data permissions, access boundaries, retention and human review. A course cannot replace organisation-specific advice.

Value comes from measured implementation

A pilot can use representative cases and a baseline to assess accuracy, correction effort, time, accessibility and escalation. Document system limits, monitor it and give the team a path to disable or revise it. A good FDE leaves a working system and an evidence trail so the organisation can choose whether to extend, maintain or stop.

Set a baseline before a pilot. Use representative examples, include cases where the system should decline or escalate, and measure quality as well as speed. Keep people accountable for consequential decisions, use authorised data, and document how the system can be paused or changed.
